Taxonomy
Prionochelys matutina was named by Zangerl (1953). Its type specimen is CNHM P27561, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Moore Brothers Farm, which is in a Santonian/Campanian carbonate limestone in Alabama.

matutina based on the presence of a pair of epineurals between neurals 45, the loss
of a cervical keel elevation, and the sharply crested, posteriorly oriented apex of the episuprapygal.
