Pelomedusoides was named by Broin (1988) [incorrectly credited by Leckey, based on Hutchison et al., to E. D. Cope 1865]. It was considered monophyletic by Pérez-García (2017).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Pelomedusoides by Gaffney et al. (2006), Cadena et al. (2012), Weems and Knight (2013), Cadena (2020) and Antunes and Pérez-García (2024).

It was assigned to Eupleurodira by de la Fuente and Iturralde-Vinent (2001) and Gaffney et al. (2006); to Panpelomedusoides by Cadena et al. (2012); to Pleurodira by Pérez-García et al. (2013) and Pérez-García and Lapparent de Broin (2013); to Testudines by Menegazzo et al. (2015); to Pleurodira by Joyce et al. (2004), Hutchison et al.
