Lophochelyinae was named by Zangerl (1953). It was considered monophyletic by Karl et al. (2012).

It was corrected as Lophocheliinae by Weems (1988).

It was assigned to Toxochelyidae by Zangerl (1953), Kuhn (1966), Moody (1980), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Weems (1988), Karl et al. (2012) and Karl and Nyhuis (2012); and to Pancheloniidae by Weems (2014).
