Taxonomy
Saurodontidae was named by Stewart. Its type is Saurodon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Chirocentridae by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Saurocephalidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981).

It was assigned to Merospondyli by Cope (1887); to Clupeoidei by Jordan (1963); to Chirocentroidea by Applegate (1970); and to Ichthyodectiformes by Stewart (1999) and Cavin et al. (2013).
