Rajoidea was named by Garman (1913).

It was corrected as Rajoidei by Cappetta (1980), Cappetta (1987) and Forey et al. (2003).

It was assigned to Batoidea by Jonet (1968) and Thurmond and Jones (1981); and to Rajiformes by Cappetta (1980), Cappetta (1987) and Forey et al. (2003).
