Odontotormae was named by Marsh (1875).

It was reranked as the suborder Odontotormae by Zittel (1890); it was reranked as the superorder Odontotormae by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Ichthyornithes by Jaekel (1911).

It was assigned to Odontornithes by Marsh (1880); to Carinatae by Zittel (1890); and to Eurhipidura by Hay (1902).
