Myliobatoidea was named as a superfamily.

It was reranked as the suborder Myliobatoidea by Thurmond and Jones (1981).

It was assigned to Batoidea by Jonet (1968), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Kumar and Loyal (1987); and to Myliobatiformes by Cappetta (1987), Kriwet (2005) and Kriwet et al. (2007).
