Taxonomy
Salamandra alleganiensis was named by Daudin (1803). It is extant. It is the type species of Cryptobranchus.

It was recombined as Cryptobranchus alleganiensis by Estes (1981), Naylor (1981), Holman et al. (1990) and Matsui et al. (2008).
