Diagnosis
Reference | Diagnosis | |
---|---|---|
J. Hector 1874 | "The Sauropterygians referred to this genus are easily distinguished from Plesiosaurus by the character of the coracoid and the elongated vertebrae. In the latter respect it approaches the genus Elasmosaurus of Cope, but differs from it in the scapular arch, and particularly in the powerful muscular attachments evidenced by the humerus." | |
N. Hiller et al. 2005 | Large elasmosaur, adult in excess of 8 m overall length. Ampullae of inner ear much enlarged, breaching dorsal outline of exoccipital-opisthotic. Neck with at least 68 cervical vertebrae, including atlas and axis. Coracoids with large conical mid-ventral process and medial profile sigmoidal in adult. Angle between ventral and dorsal rami of scapula about 130°. Dorsal ramus of scapula with almost parallel sides and squared-off distal margin. No midline bar present in either pectoral or pelvic girdle. Femur with prominent, uniquely hemispherical capitulum. |
