Testudo canetotiana was named by Lartet (1851).
It was recombined as Stylemys canetotiana by Auffenberg (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Paleotestudo antiqua by Pérez-García (2017); it was recombined as Paleotestudo canetotiana by Perez-Garcia and Murelaga (2013), Lujan et al. (2016) and Vlachos and Rabi (2018).
