Taxonomy

Hadrianus was named by Cope (1872).

It was reranked as Testudo (Hadrianus) by Williams (1953); it was reranked as Geochelone (Hadrianus) by Loveridge and Williams (1957); it was synonymized subjectively with Geochelone (Manouria) by Auffenberg (1971).

It was assigned to Testudo by Williams (1953); to Geochelone by Loveridge and Williams (1957); to Testudinidae by Cope (1871), Cope (1884), Hay (1902), Gilmore (1915), Hay (1930), Chkhikvadze (1970), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Bramble (1982), Hutchison (1992), Danilov and Averianov (1997), Holroyd et al. (2001), Joyce et al. (2004), de la Fuente et al. (2014), Lichtig and Lucas (2015) and Lichtig and Lucas (2015); and to Pantestudinidae by Vlachos (2018).

Synonyms

Testudo uintensis was named by Gilmore (1915). Its type specimen is CM 2331, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is South of Kennedy's Hole, which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Uinta Formation of Utah.

It was recombined as Testudo (Hesperotestudo) uintensis by Williams (1953); it was recombined as Stylemys uintensis by Auffenberg (1964); it was considered a nomen dubium by Vlachos (2018).
