Scoliodon was named by Muller and Henle (1837).

It was reranked as Carcharias (Scoliodon) by Woodward (1889) and Leriche (1926).

It was assigned to Carcharias by Woodward (1889) and Leriche (1926); to Galeidae by Jordan (1963); to Scoliodontinae by Long (1992); and to Carcharhinidae by Casier (1958), Case (1980), Case (1981), Compagno (2005) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
