Scoliodon was named by Muller and Henle (1837).

It was reranked as Carcharias (Scoliodon) by Woodward (1889).

It was assigned to Carcharias by Woodward (1889); to Galeidae by Jordan (1963); to Scoliodontinae by Long (1992); and to Carcharhinidae by Case (1980), Case (1981), Compagno (2005) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
