Taxonomy
Pterodactylus macronyx was named by Buckland (1829). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lyme Regis, which is in a Hettangian/Sinemurian marine mudstone in the Blue Lias Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was recombined as Dimorphodon macronyx by Owen (1859), Owen (1860), Owen (1861), Zittel (1890), Perrier (1928), Delair (1958), Charig (1967), Clark et al. (1998), Unwin (2003), Andres et al. (2014).
