Ancyloceras was named by d'Orbigny (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr-l K Apti-u]. Its type is Ancyloceras matheronianum. It is the type genus of Ancylocerataceae, Ancyloceratidae, Ancyloceratinae.
It was reranked as Crioceras (Ancyloceras) by Gabb (1864).
It was assigned to Crioceras by Gabb (1864); to Ammonoidea by Murphy (1956); to Cephalopoda by Giers (1964); to Ancyloceratidae by Murphy (1975), Kakabadze and Hoedemaeker (1997); and to Ancyloceratinae by Renz (1982), Förster and Weier (1983), Wright et al.
