Corixa was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Corixidae, Corixini, Corixinae, Corixoidea.

It was assigned to Hemiptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766), Latreille (1796); to Notonectariae by Latreille (1802); to Notonectidae by Heer (1853); to Corixinae by Statz (1950), Popov (1971); to Corixidae by Scudder (1890), Zhang (1989); and to Corixini by Nel and Paicheler (1993).
