Barbatodon was named by Radulesco and Samson (1987).
It was assigned to Multituberculata by Radulescu and Samson (2003); to Cimolodonta by Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Kogaionidae by Csiki et al. (2005), Codrea et al. (2014), Smith and Codrea (2015), Solomon et al. (2016).
