Taxonomy
Belemnoziphius prorops was named by Leidy (1876). Its type specimen is ANSP 11421, a partial skull (rostrum), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pacific Guano Company, which is in a Zanclean marine marl in the Goose Creek Formation of South Carolina.
It was recombined as Dioplodon prorops by Leidy (1877); it was recombined as Mesoplodon prorops by Cope (1890), Trouessart (1898), Hay (1902) and Trouessart (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Mesoplodon longirostris by Abel (1905).
