Tapirulus was named by Gervais (1850). It is not extant. Its type is Tapirulus hyracinus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Lophiodon by Scott (1883).
It was assigned to Dacrytheriidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Choeropotamidae by Erfurt and Metais (2007); and to Tapirulidae by Bai et al. (2023).
