Caroloameghinia was named by Ameghino (1901). Its type is Caroloameghinia mater. It is the type genus of Caroloameghinidae.

It was assigned to Caroloameghinidae by Ameghino (1901); to Caroloameghiniidae by Simpson (1948); and to Polydolopimorphia by Goin et al. (2006).
