Niobrarasaurus was named by Carpenter et al. (1995). It was considered monophyletic by Vickaryous et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Ankylosauria by Vickaryous et al. (2004); and to Nodosauridae by Carpenter et al. (1995), Ford (2000), Carpenter (2001), Pereda Suberbiola and Galton (2001), Ford and Kirkland (2001), Carpenter and Everhart (2007), Yang et al. (2017), Galton (2019).
