Taxonomy
Orycterocetus quadratidens was named by Leidy (1853) [No type locality information is given by Leidy (1853) other than Miocene of Virginia.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 9065 - 9069, a mandible (2 teeth, 2 partial mandibular rami), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Orycterocetus.
It was replaced with Orycterocetus cornutidens by Leidy (1856); it was recombined as Physeter quadratidens by Trouessart (1898) and Trouessart (1904).
