Taxonomy

Anodontosaurus was named by Sternberg (1929).

It was synonymized subjectively with Euoplocephalus by Coombs (1978), Coombs (1978), Galton (1983), Tumanova (1987), Carpenter (2001), Vickaryous et al. (2004), Ryan and Evans (2005); it was synonymized subjectively with Dyoplosaurus by Ford (2000).

It was assigned to Stegosauria by Sternberg (1929); to Nodosauridae by Russell (1930), Romer (1956), Parsch (1963), Tatarinov (1964), Kuhn (1964), Simmons (1965), Romer (1966); to Ankylosaurinae by Russell and Chamney (1967), Arbour and Currie (2013); to Ankylosauria by Han et al. (2014); to Ankylosauridae by Maleev (1956), Eberth (1997), Arbour et al. (2014), Arbour et al. (2014); to Ankylosaurini by Arbour and Currie (2016); and to Euoplocephalini by Penkalski (2018).

Penkalski 2018	A moderate to large (5+ m) euoplocephalin with weakly keeled squamosal bosses; ornamental rows of small scales bordering the squamosal and quadratojugal bosses; ossified postocular scales fill region between squamosal and quadratojugal bosses; interstitial osteoderms present on h.r.1; armour dominated by oval, low-keeled osteoderms; tail club major plates tend to be wider than long (triangular). Differs from Euoplocephalus in having a smaller, bell- or fan-shaped nasal plate, full postocular caputegulae, and interstitial osteoderms on h.r.1. Differs from Dyoplosaurus in having a wider-than-long tail club knob. Differs from Scolosaurus in having mostly oval, low-keeled osteoderms.
