Proetus natator was named by Barrande (1852). It is the type species of Natatoraspis.
It was recombined as Cornuproetus (Eremiproetus) natator by Alberti (1964); it was recombined as Natatoraspis natator by Pribyl (1967); it was recombined as Eremiproetus natator by Chlupáč (1982).
