Pomatodelphis santamaria
Taxonomy
Pomatodelphis santamaria was named by Godfrey and Lambert (2023). Its type specimen is CMM-V-4669, a partial skull (partial skull including most of the neurocranium (with the two peri- otics in situ, but without supraorbital processes) and the rostrum base), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Chesapeake Ranch Estates, which is in a Tortonian shallow subtidal siliciclastic in the St. Marys Formation of Maryland.

S. J. Godfrey and O. Lambert 2023 | This medium-sized pomato- delphinine is characterized by an anteroventral slope of the dor- sal surface of frontals and nasals on the vertex; greatly reduced nasals; an anterolateral extension of the dorsal exposure of the frontal on the vertex, which precludes or markedly reduces the nasal-premaxilla contact; a triangular exposure of the interpari- etal between the frontals and supraoccipital on the vertex; and a deep fossa on the anterior surface of the exoccipital (presumably for the posterior sinus).
It diers from Zarhachis flagellator in the vertex being roughly transversely flat and slightly anteroposteriorly convex; zygomatic process of the squamosal being markedly shorter, higher than long in lateral view; much reduced postglenoid process of the squamosal being significantly shorter ventrally than the exoccipital; anterior wall of pars cochlearis being flat (versus convex in Z. flagellator) in ventral view; lateral tuberos- ity of periotic being longer and more pointed; inner posterior prominence of tympanic bulla being longer; and anterolateral concavity on the tympanic bulla being deeper. It further diers from Pomatodelphis inaequalis in its size being smaller (bizy- gomatic width estimated at 190 mm in P. santamaria and 210– 215 mm in P. inaequalis), nasal-frontal suture being posteriorly convex (versus roughly rectilinear to posteriorly concave in P. inaequalis), posterior wall of the nuchal crest along the vertex being posteriorly convex in dorsal view, much reduced postgle- noid process of the squamosal being significantly shorter ven- trally than the exoccipital, pars cochlearis of the periotic being proportionally smaller compared to the anterior process, aper- ture for the endolymphatic duct being more transversely elon- gated, and lateral tuberosity of the periotic being longer and more pointed. It further diers from Pomatodelphis bobengi in its size being markedly smaller (bizygomatic width up to 290 mm in the latter), nasal-frontal suture being posteriorly convex (versus roughly rectilinear in P. bobengi), pars cochlearis of the periotic being proportionally smaller compared to the anterior process, aperture for the endolymphatic duct being more trans- versely elongated, anteromedial corner of the anterior process not being pointed, lateral tuberosity of periotic being longer and more pointed, and articular process of the periotic being directed posteroventrally (instead of laterally). |
