Charniodiscus was named by Ford (1958) [Sepkoski's age data: V u
DIAGNOSIS: Disc-like organisms, usually 5-30 cms. in diameter, with a rough-surfaced central area surrounded by a smooth flange which may or may not bear concentric corrugations".
REMARKS: "In spite of the possible association of this genus with the preceding [Charnia masoni] a separate name is given on morphological grounds".]. Its type is Charniodiscus concentricus.
It was assigned to Rangeomorpha by Sepkoski (2002); to Petalonamae by Hofmann et al. (2008); and to Arboreomorpha by Erwin et al. (2011).
