Cyphaspis acanthina was named by Coignou (1890).

It was recombined as Brachymetopus (Coignouina) acanthina by Reed (1943); it was recombined as Namuropyge acanthina by Tilsley (1988); it was recombined as Namuropyge (Coignouina) acanthina by Müller et al. (2021).
