Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
A. E. Hernández-Cisneros 2022Kaaucetus thesaurus gen. et sp. nov., specimen MU_EcSj1/29/141, is differentiated from other known aetiocetids by having: pronounced squamosal prominence like a fingertip, zygomatic process as a continuous arch with a tapering end, and very narrow and converging posterior nasals. Kaaucetus thesaurus gen. et
sp. nov. is classified as an aetiocetid whale (Barnes etal.1995; Deméré & Berta 2008; Marx et al.2 016; Peredo & Pyenson 2018) by having: small body size (bizygomatic width ~320mm), slender zygomatic process of the squamosal, stepped premaxilla at the level of the nasal opening and laterally overhanging the maxilla, elongated lacrimal incising into the ascending process of the maxilla, the supraorbital process of frontal elevated at the same level as cranial vertex, large orbit, a post- orbital ridge of the frontal absent, and anterior end of the nasals just anterior of the anterior edge of the supraorbital process (the nasal length is 55.4% of the bizygomatic width). Kaaucetus thesaurus gen. et sp. nov. differs from Mammalodontidae by having a longer rostrum with the rostral proportion index (RPI; Boessenecker et al. 2017) higher (1.32 RPI) than those in Janjucetus (0.86 RPI) or Mammalodon (0.89 RPI); from Llanocetidae and Coronodon from lacking relative long body size; and from Chaeomysticeti by having a slender zygomatic process.
