Hypnoidini was named by Schwarz (1906). It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Hypnoidinae by Douglas et al. (2021), Cai et al. (2022).

It was assigned to Dendrometrinae by Bouchard et al. (2011), Kundrata et al. (2020), Kundrata et al. (2021); and to Elateridae by Douglas et al. (2021), Cai et al. (2022).
