Scopelus mimiensis was named by Frost (1934). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Waikiekie Stream, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in New Zealand.
It was recombined as Lampanyctodes mimiensis by Schwarzhans (1980) and Schwarzhans (2019).
