Taxonomy

Heterotermes was named by Froggatt (1897). It is extant. It is the type genus of Heterotermitinae.

It was assigned to Rhinotermitidae by Carpenter (1992), Solórzano Kraemer (2007), Engel (2008); to Heterotermitinae by Froggatt (1897), Snyder (1949), Nel and Paicheler (1993), Fontes and Vulcano (1998), Krishna et al. (2013); and to Heterotermitidae by Hellemans et al. (2024).

Synonyms

Leucotermes was named by Silvestri (1901). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heterotermes by Krishna et al. (2013).
Lukotermes was named by Perkovsky and Nel (2021). Its type is Lukotermes milescaput.

It was synonymized subjectively with Heterotermes by Hellemans et al. (2024).

It was assigned to Heterotermitinae by Perkovsky and Nel (2021).
