Barytherium
Taxonomy
Barytherium was named by Andrews (1901). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Barytheriidae.
It was assigned to Proboscidea by Mahboubi et al. (1984); and to Barytheriidae by Andrews (1906), Abel (1919), Simpson (1945), Carroll (1988), Shoshani and Tassy (1996), McKenna and Bell (1997), Shoshani and Tassy (2005), Sanders et al. (2010), Seiffert et al. (2012).
