Taxonomy
Otarion elegans was named by Munster (1842). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Schübelhammer (Münster collection), which is in a Famennian marine horizon in the Wapnica Formation of Germany. It is the type species of Skemmatocare.

It was recombined as Skemmatocare elegans by Richter and Richter (1927).
