Wyolestes was named by Gingerich (1981). It is not extant. Its type is Wyolestes apheles.

It was assigned to Mesonychoidea by Gingerich (1982); to Mesonychidae by Gingerich (1981) and Carroll (1988); to Cete by Archibald (1998); and to Wyolestidae by Gingerich (1998).
