Myrmica schaefersi was named by Jessen (2020). Its type specimen is NHMM-PE2009/5826-LS, an exoskeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Enspel, horizon S16, which is in a MP 28 crater lake shale/tuff in Germany.
