Ceratites japonicus was named by von Mojsisovics (1888). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ouri, Rikuzen, Ishinomaki, which is in an Anisian marine horizon in Japan.
It was recombined as Hollandites japonicus by Spath (1934), Spath (1934).
