Taxonomy
Mylohyus was named by Cope (1869). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Tayassu by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Tayassuinae by McKenna and Bell (1997), Wright (1998); to Platygonini by Dutra et al. (2017); to Mylohyini by Prothero (2021); and to Tayassuidae by Cope (1869), Gidley (1920), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Carroll (1988), Albright et al. (2019), Eshelman et al. (2025).

Synonyms
  • Mylohyus obtusidens was named by Hay (1920). Its type specimen is USNM 9186, a set of teeth (A complete upper canine, and the crown of a lower one), and it is a 3D body fossil.

    It was considered a nomen dubium by Lundelius (1960).
