Psiloceras spelae was named by Guex et al. (1998) [In Muller Canyon Section C (in Guex et al. 1998) of Section 6 (Guex 1995), 5.3 m below horizon with Choristoceras minutus (which is PBDB 188657) ]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is No N-8-a, a shell, and it is a mold.
