Platylithophycus was named by Johnson and Howell (1948). It is not extant. Its type is Platylithophycus cretaceum.

It was assigned to Sepiida by Miller and Walker (1968); to Codiaceae by Andrews (1970); and to Elasmobranchii by Bronson and Maisey (2018).
