Taxonomy

Hemipsalodon was named by Cope (1885). Its type is Hemipsalodon grandis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pterodon by Matthew (1901), Matthew (1909) and Savage (1965).

It was assigned to Oxyaenidae by Cope (1885), Cope (1891); to Hyaenodontinae by Hay (1902), Van Valen (1967); to Hyaenodontidae by Scott (1892), Lambe (1908), Schlaikjer (1935), Mellett (1977), Gustafson (1986), McKenna and Bell (1997), Gunnell (1998); to Paroxyaenini by Solé et al. (2015); and to Hyainailourinae by Borths and Stevens (2017).
