Cybister cognatus was named by Gyllenhal (1827). It is extant.

It was recombined as Dicheirotrichus cognatus by Kiselev and Nazarov (2009), Tamutis et al. (2011); it was recombined as Dicheirotrichus (Trichocellus) cognatus by Bousquet (2012).
