Osteodontornis was named by Howard (1957). Its type is Osteodontornis orri.
It was synonymized subjectively with Pelagornis by Mayr and Rubilar-Rogers (2010).
It was assigned to Pseudodontornithidae by Howard (1957), Wetmore (1960), Howard (1968), Howard (1972), Harrison and Walker (1976) and Howard (1978); and to Pelagornithidae by Olson (1985), Carroll (1988) and Matsuoka et al. (1998).
