Galechirus was named by Broom (1907). It is not extant. Its type is Galechirus scholtzi.

It was assigned to Dromasauria by Broom (1907); to Dromasauria by Broom (1913); to Galeopsidae by Carroll (1988); to Galechiridae by King (1988); to Anomocephaloidea by Cisneros et al. (2011); and to Chainosauria by Fröbisch and Reisz (2011).
