Kentrosaurus was named by Hennig (1915). It is the type genus of Kentrosauridae.

It was replaced with Kentrurosaurus by Hennig (1916), Hoffstetter (1957) and Kuhn (1964).

It was assigned to Kentrosauridae by Olshevsky and Ford (1993) and Blows (2001); to Stegosaurinae by Romer (1956), Dong et al. (1983), Zhou (1983), Zhou (1986) and Maidment et al. (2008); to Stegosauridae by Hennig (1915), Hennig (1915), Tatarinov (1964), Romer (1966), Charig (1967), Swinton (1970), Galton (1977), Galton (1980), Bonaparte (1986), Carroll (1988), Galton (1990), Carpenter et al. (2001), Galton and Upchurch (2004), Maidment et al. (2006) and Mateus et al. (2009); to Stegosauria by Mallison (2011); and to Kentrurosaurinae by Ulansky (2014).

It was synonymized subjectively with Stegosaurus by Piveteau (1926); it was synonymized subjectively with Kentrosaurus by Romer (1956), Tatarinov (1964), Romer (1966), Fischer (1970), Swinton (1970), Anderson (1982), Galton (1982), Galton (1990), Galton (1990), Galton and Upchurch (2004), Maidment et al. (2008), Mallison (2011) and Ulansky (2014).

It was assigned to Stegosauria by Young (1944); to Stegosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928) and Hoffstetter and Brun (1958); and to Stegosauridae by Hennig (1916), Chakravarti (1934), Young (1959), Kuhn (1964) and Delair (1973).
Doryphorosaurus was named by Nopcsa (1916). Its type is Kentrosaurus aethiopicus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Kentrurosaurus by Hennig (1916), Hoffstetter (1957) and Kuhn (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Kentrosaurus by Romer (1956), Tatarinov (1964), Romer (1966), Anderson (1982), Galton (1982), Galton (1990), Galton and Upchurch (2004), Maidment et al. (2008), Mallison (2011) and Ulansky (2014).
