Dimorphodontidae was named by Seeley (1870). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Clark et al. (1998).
It was reranked as the subfamily Dimorphodontinae by Kuhn (1946).
It was assigned to Ornithosauria by Cope (1871), Cope (1875); to Rhamphorhynchidae by Kuhn (1946); to Rhamphorhynchoidea by Delair (1958), Young (1964), Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988); to Pterosauria by Bakker (1986), Clark et al. (1998); to Macronychoptera by Unwin (2003); and to Pterosauria by Britt et al. (2018).
