Taxonomy

Parasuchus was named by Lydekker (1885). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011), Kammerer et al. (2016).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Long and Murry (1995).

It was assigned to Mystriosuchidea by Huene (1922); to Parasuchinae by Chatterjee (1978); to Phytosauridae by Carroll (1988); to Parasuchia by Sereno (1991); to Phytosauria by Nesbitt (2011), Stocker and Butler (2013); and to Parasuchidae by Kammerer et al. (2016).

Synonyms

Arganarhinus was named by Long and Murry (1995).

It was synonymized subjectively with Parasuchus by Kammerer et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Paleorhininae by Long and Murry (1995).
Mesorhinus was named by Jaekel (1910).

It was replaced with Mesorhinosuchus by Kuhn (1961), Kuhn (1964), Kuhn (1971).

It was assigned to Parasuchia by Jaekel (1910); to Phytosauridae by Watson (1917); and to Stagonolepidae by Huene (1922).
Mesorhinus fraasi was named by Jaekel (1910) [Type and only specimen was previously in the collections of the University of GÃ¶ttingen, but was destroyed during World War 2 by a fire]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Wipperbrücke, Parforcehaus, which is in a Smithian terrestrial sandstone in Germany.

It was recombined as Mesorhinosuchus fraasi by Kuhn (1961), Kuhn (1971); it was considered a nomen dubium by Hunt and Lucas (1991).

It was synonymized subjectively with Paleorhinus by Hunt and Lucas (1991).

It was assigned to Thecodontia by Kuhn (1964); to Mesorhinosuchidae by Kuhn (1966); and to Parasuchida by Kuhn (1971).
Paleorhinus was named by Williston (1904). Its type is Paleorhinus bransoni. It is the type genus of Paleorhinidae. It was considered paraphyletic by Stocker (2010).

It was corrected as Palaeorhinus by Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Parasuchus by Kammerer et al. (2016).

It was assigned to Mystriosuchidea by Huene (1922), Case (1922); to Paleorhinidae by Kuhn (1971); to Phytosauridae by Watson (1917), Hay (1930), Kuhn (1964), Charig (1967), Hunt and Lucas (1991); to Paleorhininae by Long and Murry (1995); to Parasuchia by Irmis (2005); and to Phytosauria by Stocker (2010), Stocker and Butler (2013).
