Hyporhina was named by Baur (1893). It is extant. Its type is Hyporhina antiqua.
It was assigned to Amphisbaenidae by Hay (1902); to Leposternidae by Hay (1930); to Hyporhinidae by Baur (1893), Galbreath (1953), Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); and to Rhineuridae by Longrich et al. (2015).
