Taxonomy
Planocephalosaurus was named by Fraser (1982). Its type is Planocephalosaurus robinsonae.
It was assigned to Sphenodontia by Apesteguia et al. (2012); to Rhynchocephalia by Reynoso (2000) and Rauhut et al. (2012); to Sphenodontia by Herrera-Flores et al. (2018); and to Sphenodontidae by Fraser (1982), Carroll (1988), Murry (1989), Heckert (2004) and Skinner et al. (2020).
