Taxonomy
Hovasaurus was named by Piveteau (1926). Its type is Hovasaurus boulei.

It was assigned to Tangasaurinae by Currie (1981), Currie (1982), Benton (1985); and to Tangasauridae by Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988).
