Kapes was named by Ivakhnenko (1975). Its type is Kapes amaenus.

It was assigned to Procolophoninae by Novikov (1991), Spencer and Benton (2000), Spencer and Storrs (2002); to Leptopleuroninae by Säilä (2008); and to Procolophonidae by Ivakhnenko (1975), Carroll (1988), Ivakhnenko (2008).
