Taxonomy
Ptomalestes avidus was named by Boonstra (1954). Its type specimen is SAM 11942 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Steenboksfontein, Merweville, which is in a Capitanian terrestrial horizon in South Africa.
It was synonymized subjectively with Pristerognathus polyodon by Huttenlocker (2009).
